More Information

What Is a Pub Quiz?

The pub quiz is a time-honoured British tradition, bringing friends, colleagues, and strangers together over drinks, food, and a battle of wits. Pub quizzes emerged during the 1970s as a way to liven up weekday evenings in local pubs, and quickly became a nationwide staple. Today, they are a fixture of British social life, blending friendly competition with an excuse to enjoy a drink and some classic pub fare with friends.

Typically, teams compete over several rounds of questions covering general knowledge, history, pop culture, and sometimes a bit of local trivia. While the goal is to win, pub quizzes are as much about the experience: laughing over tricky questions, debating answers, and bonding over shared knowledge hits and misses.

Fuel Your Brain – and Your Appetite

A pub quiz isn’t complete without fish and chips and a pint! Participation in the pub quiz includes:

  • A serving of traditional British beer-battered fish and chips, minted crushed peas, and tartare sauce.
  • A pint of British ale, lager, or a non-alcoholic alternative to keep the thinking juices flowing.
  • Additional drinks will be available for purchase at the bar, so feel free to sample a variety of local brews while you strategise your way to victory.

    How It Works

The IAFOR Classic British Pub Quiz is a team-based challenge where groups compete across multiple rounds of trivia covering general knowledge, British culture, and more. You can form a team in advance with colleagues or join one when you arrive at the event. Either way, it’s a great way to meet new people and make new connections!

Each round, your team will work together to answer a series of questions, writing down your responses before they are marked. Expect a mix of serious and lighthearted questions, and don’t be afraid to take a guess!

The evening will be hosted by Matthew Chima, IAFOR’s Marketing Manager, who has spent the past six years hosting quizzes for the international community in Japan. Expect an engaging and welcoming quizmaster to guide you through the quiz!
