About the British Museum

The British Museum, established in 1753 and opening to the public in 1759, stands as one of the oldest and largest museums in the world. Founded on the collections of Sir Hans Sloane, it has grown through the centuries to house over eight million works that chronicle the story of human culture from its beginnings to the present. This tour offers an in-depth exploration of this prestigious institution, highlighting its historical significance and the diverse treasures it holds.

As you walk through the grand halls of the museum, you will be guided through a selection of its most famous collections. The Ancient Egypt and Sudan collection includes the iconic Rosetta Stone and the mummy of Katebet. The Greek and Roman antiquities showcase is equally impressive, featuring the Elgin Marbles from the Parthenon in Athens and the Portland Vase, a masterpiece of Roman glasswork.

Another highlight is the Asian galleries, which contain a vast array of artefacts from the world’s largest continent, including the exquisite Amaravati sculptures and Chinese ceramics. The museum also presents significant pieces from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas, offering a rare chance to engage with indigenous arts and tools that speak volumes about the lives of peoples from every corner of the globe.
