In more than two decades of attending conferences on language teaching the presenter has seen many interesting presentations on topics such as discourse analysis, student motivation, and diversity in the classroom. However, he has come away from all these conferences with surprisingly few practical suggestions for the classroom. In the early 2010s, the presenter started teaching medical English in capacious lecture rooms filled with sixty or more students. With so many students, how could he ensure that they all got an opportunity to speak? Observing a Japanese lecturer teach a pharmacology lesson, the presenter saw how a microphone was passed from student to student. The student with the microphone then become the center of attention as he or she completed a task, whether it was reading from the PowerPoint slide, answering a question, or giving an opinion. This simple technique that the presenter had not before considered was transformational, and the instruction “Pass the mic” has been vital to his success in teaching large classes. Most teachers will have their own classroom hacks, effective solutions to problems encountered while teaching, learnt from colleagues or conceived themselves in response to the demands of their specific contexts. In this presentation, the presenter will demonstrate a selection of hacks he has developed over his many years teaching. He also looks forward to participants sharing their own tips and techniques.
