The rapid evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across industries has created an urgent need for higher education to align their curricula with contemporary workforce demands. The primary objective of this study is to develop a foundational understanding of the current AI skills gap between industry and higher education. To obtain the objective, this scoping review addresses two critical questions: (1) What specific AI competencies are expected by industry, and (2) how are graduate programs preparing students to meet these needs? The study sourced literature from six journal databases: Taylor & Francis, Springer, Frontiers, Sage, Elsevier, and Emerald Insight. From the initial poll of 200, a total of 26 articles, encompassing qualitative, quantitative, mixed-method, and review studies were selected for the final coding. The review followed the PICOS (population, intervention, comparison, outcomes, and setting) model for document evaluation, employed for detailed inductive coding. Consistent with scoping review methodology, inter-coder reliability was maintained to ensure rigor and transparency. Afterwards, a thematic analysis was conducted for reporting the findings. The findings of the study indicate that graduate employability is no longer defined solely by degree acquisition but by dynamic skills intelligence. The findings suggest that successful graduates are those who can navigate the psychological challenges of AI adoption, master the operational use of AI tools, and leverage unique human capabilities to collaborate with, rather than compete against, artificial intelligence. The findings will support policymakers in tertiary education in adapting existing curricula to better align with industry demands, thereby enhancing graduate students’ employability and workforce readiness.
