Between Promise and Caution: Pre-Service EFL Teachers Integrating GenAI into Microteaching (107825)

The present exploratory case study investigated pre-service EFL teachers’ integration of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools into micro-teaching practices. Data were collected from 70 third-year pre-service EFL teachers and analyzed via thematic analysis under the guidance of Extended Technology Acceptance Model (TAM2). Findings revealed that majority of the pre-service teachers voluntarily incorporated GenAI tools into their micro teaching practices. Among the tools, ChatGPT was the most frequently used one, followed by Canva, Gemini, Grammarly. Additionally, certain multimodal AI tools were also mentioned like Leonardo AI and Eleven Labs. GenAI was primarily employed in lesson planning and activity design, content creation, presentation preparation, and pedagogical/accuracy support. Significant advantages were also mentioned including time and effort-savings, enhanced creativity and practicality, and increased confidence. However, certain disadvantages emerged regarding reduced teacher creativity, over-reliance, and unreliable or generic output. It was clear from the results that pre-service EFL teachers are positive and active users of GenAI tools, but they were also cautious supporters. The research provides empirical data from an EFL teacher education setting by extending the use of multimodal GenAI applications in microteaching and underscores the need for teacher education programs to develop structured, reflective methods for ethical GenAI use in microteaching.
