Adolescents face increasingly complex learning environments characterized by digital overload, fragmented attention, and diminishing opportunities for authentic social learning and embodied experience. These developments correlate with observed declines in intrinsic motivation, reduced frustration tolerance, and rising difficulties in emotional regulation and social functioning — trends underscored by both the OECD Learning Compass 2030 and the Council of the European Union’s Key Competences framework. This paper introduces the “Challenge Board” method, a structured, value-based educational framework designed to foster long-term development of self-leadership, personal responsibility, executive functions, and social competences in youth over a multi-year trajectory. Empirical support stems from recent intervention studies demonstrating that school-based programmes can yield measurable gains in attention, working memory, inhibition, and self-regulatory behaviour — for instance, as shown by Paananen et al. (2022) and Lertladaluck et al. (2021). The paper reflects critically on programme design, scalability, and contextual adaptation for diverse school settings, arguing that sustainable impact requires embedding self-regulation training within broader school development strategies rather than implementing isolated add-on modules. Finally, it outlines how the Challenge Board aligns with global educational agendas, offering a practical pathway for schools to realize the vision of student agency, cooperation and resilience articulated by OECD and EU frameworks. The discussion highlights implications for educational policy, teacher training, and future research on long-term student development.
