Metacognitive AI Learning Cycle: A Framework for Intentional and Effective Learning (108873)

Session: Poster Session 2
Room: Brunei Gallery (Ground Floor)
Presentation Type:Poster Presentation
As generative AI becomes embedded in higher education, students increasingly risk outsourcing core cognitive processes to intelligent systems. While institutional responses have focused on policy and assessment redesign, less attention has been given to how learners regulate their own AI use during everyday academic tasks. This poster presents the Metacognitive AI Learning Cycle, a student-centered framework designed to support intentional and reflective AI-supported learning.
The cycle structures engagement across five stages: clarifying the learning demand prior to tool use, defining the scope of AI support, designing interactions that preserve cognitive effort, monitoring for signs of outsourcing, and verifying independent competence. Embedded “return triggers” prompt learners to recalibrate when AI begins to replace, rather than support, intellectual work. Grounded in metacognitive and self-regulated learning theory, the framework positions AI as a scaffold for deeper engagement.
The framework was implemented in a technology-enhanced learning course in an English-medium instruction (EMI) context. Evaluation drew on student reflections, selected task comparisons, and instructor observations of AI use. Initial findings suggest increased student awareness of how and when to use AI, along with some evidence of more deliberate prompting and greater attempts to verify understanding. However, variation across students indicates that sustained support and practice are needed.
The poster outlines the framework, its implementation, and early evaluation insights, offering a practical model for fostering responsible AI use in higher education.
