Digital platforms have increasingly become central to modern language learning, providing learners with enhanced opportunities for flexibility, personalization, and the development of autonomy. This study investigates the ways in which Moroccan university students use digital platforms to foster autonomous learning in English. Adopting a quantitative descriptive–correlational research design, data were collected from a sample of 199 students using a structured questionnaire. The findings indicate that most participants (82.4%) study English within their academic programs and display a moderate level of engagement with digital learning tools. Overall, students expressed positive attitudes towards the effectiveness of these platforms in supporting their learning processes. Additionally, a significant majority (83.4%) recognized the importance of autonomous English learning in enhancing their language proficiency.
Despite these encouraging trends, the study identifies a notable shortcoming in institutional support. Only 26.6% of respondents indicated that they receive consistent or structured guidance from their instructors on how to effectively use digital platforms for learning purposes. This gap suggests that while students are willing and prepared to engage in autonomous learning, they often lack the pedagogical support necessary to maximize the benefits of digital resources. The study concludes by emphasizing the need for higher education institutions to bridge this gap. It recommends the integration of digital literacy into curricula, the professional development of professors in autonomy-oriented instructional strategies, and the establishment of supportive environments that promote self-directed learning. Such measures are essential for optimizing the role of digital platforms in language education.
