Social-emotional learning has gained increasing attention, with various researchers developing social-emotional learning scales for general students for assessment purposes. However, due to the distinct physical and psychological characteristics of gifted students, the design of such scales should consider different dimensions to better address their specific developmental needs. Based on a literature review, the use of social-emotional scales for general students, and classroom behavior observation checklist for gifted students, we designed a scale that encompasses five dimensions of social-emotional learning: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making, consisting of 77 items. A total of 180 gifted secondary school’s gifted students were surveyed, with 173 valid responses. Factor analysis revealed four major dimensions and seven factors, explaining 61.18% of the variance. These factors include: self-awareness (self-understanding and confidence expression), self-management (self-control and goal execution), social awareness, and social behavior (relationship skills and problem-solving). These factors differ from those identified in adult populations and reflect the specific social-emotional learning dimensions that may be exhibited by gifted students at the middle school level, consisting of 40 items. Finally, the study invited 442 gifted middle school students to participate in the survey to provide a reference for the direction of future affective education. The results showed there are significant differences across all four dimensions among gifted secondary school students based on gender, grade, type of giftedness, and region. Based on these statistical findings, teachers and parents of gifted students should pay closer attention to the socio-emotional development and learning of gifted students.
