An important, albeit not immediately obvious, trend in art film that emerged in the 20th century is screendance. This creative and artistic space intertwines three distinct disciplines: music, choreography, and cinematography. The film image becomes a tool for evoking the artistic phenomena encountered by the camera. While choreography and music retain their structure and autonomy, they are embodied in a new medium that transforms choreography materially, while music acquires additional non-musical visual significances. This mode of interpreting art allows audiences to experience it from a different perspective and dynamic. This presentation aims to discuss and elucidate the significance of screendance in the context of the synthesis of the arts. A comparative analysis of two artistic creations – “Movement Interpretation of ‘Sacher Variation’” by Witold Lutosławski, created by this paper’s author (2025), and “100m” by Monika Szpunar (2022) – will highlight two distinct creative strategies focused on the intricate relationship between music, choreography and film. The selected artistic works will facilitate a discussion of screendance as a practice that generates space for the contemporary art audience, emphasizing the value of dynamization and revitalization of artworks through filmic transposition, while restoring balance among music, dance, and film within their own individual realms.
